A modern gym with weights, exercise machines and air conditioning

New guidance was published in March 2023 through collaboration between the Association of Noise Consultants (ANC), the Institute of Acoustics (IoA), and the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health (CIEH).

The GAG document provides recommendations to developers, operators, and Local Authorities regarding the approach to the design of gyms, fitness and exercise spaces to avoid noise and vibration impact.

The working group who contributed includes members of independent private practices, public bodies, and manufacturers of acoustic insulation, noise reduction materials, acoustic engineering and vibration control products. The working group believes the approach encouraged by ProPG will offer suitable guidance in most situations.

Guidance is also included for developers and local authorities to help identify where such development should generally be avoided (unless there are extensive design considerations).

There is a trend to place gyms close to where people live or work, meaning that acoustic considerations are important. The GAG guidance aims to support sustainable development by advising on design and build of facilities close to where people live and work, without causing noise and vibration problems.
