				<div class="et_pb_text_inner"><p>Data centres are large-scale facilities designed specifically to house computer systems and related components which stores and processes vast amounts of data as well as to distributing and enabling access to the data resources.</p>
<p>In 2022, it was estimated that 1-1.3% of global electricity demand was consumed by data centres. Due to increased demand for data to facilitate the evolving digital services, particularly for Artificial Intelligence systems, data centres are becoming crucial to global digital infrastructure and are being built at an increasing rate. The IEA projects that the electricity requirements for data centres could double between 2022 and 2026.</p>
<p>The noise output within data centres is often overlooked. AI servers are especially loud and often create unfavourable working conditions in the server rooms/data halls. One such server is the Nvidea DGX H100 system. The associated datasheet indicates a sound power noise level of L<sub>w</sub> 97 to 99 dB(A) depending on temperature – this is incredibly loud!</p>
<p>In the UK, employers are obligated to protect their employees from noise exposure within the workplace under the Control of Noise at Work Regulations (2005). The Noise at Work Regulations define exposure limit and action values relating to average sound exposure and peak sound pressure:</p>

<p>These exposure limits and action values are low relative to the sound power of the Nvidea DGX H100 servers. Noise at work assessments consider both the noise levels to which an operator is exposed and the duration of the exposure, therefore, staff exposed to noise from the Nvidea DGX H100, or similar servers, must limit their exposure and should wear appropriate hearing protection.</p>
<p>At Clement Acoustics, we offer high-quality noise at work assessments. Our consultants will attend site to undertake manual measurements of employee noise exposure levels. Liaison with employers is an important step in the general assessment, as precise information helps us to formulate an overall ‘noise-exposure scenario’ relating the measured noise levels with the actual working times of staff.</p>
<p>Noise measurement data collected during our site visit, in parallel with the information about work patterns, helps us to construct a realistic noise exposure scenario for all employees.</p>
<p>We then produce a detailed noise at work assessment in accordance with the Control of Noise at Work Regulations (2005) describing our survey methodology, data analysis and final outcomes. If the results demonstrate non-compliance with noise exposure limits as set out in the Control of Noise at Work Regulations: 2005, practical solutions will be suggested for the protection of employees.</p>

<p style="text-align: justify;">Padel tennis, often just called padel, is a racquet sport that combines elements of tennis and squash. It’s played in doubles on an enclosed court that&#8217;s about a third the size of a tennis court, that the ball can bounce off, much like in squash.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Padel is extremely popular in Spain, Argentina, Sweden, and is growing quickly around the world, including in the UK, US, and Middle East.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Padel is considered easier to pick up for a novice compared with traditional tennis, and is typically a more social sport with a lot of rallies and teamwork.</p>
<h3 style="text-align: justify;">Concerns Around Noise</h3>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Due to the reduced playing area and the enclosed nature of the court, it is possible to fit padel courts into smaller spaces than would typically be required for a tennis court. As the courts can be covered, it is also less weather dependent.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">These factors, along with the increased popularity, mean that many developers are seeking to install courts in areas where traditional tennis courts wouldn’t be desirable nor practicable, often close to residential areas including central urban areas.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">This reduced distance separation, the increased frequency of ball strikes on court surrounds and plastic racquets, and the social aspect leading to an increase in vocal noise all lead to an increased potential noise impact. As such, noise assessments are a critical aspect when considering the suitability of proposed court installations.</p>
<h3 style="text-align: justify;">Limitations of Traditional Assessment Criteria</h3>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Typically, a noise impact assessment of a commercial activity would rely on the assessment methodology and guidance given in British Standard 4142: 2014 +A1: 2019 ‘<em>Methods for rating and assessing industrial and commercial sound</em>’.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">However, Paragraph 1.3 of the Standard includes a list of elements that are not intended to be assessed, which includes ‘recreational activities’.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">As such, it is necessary to find more applicable guidance or criteria to apply to the assessment of padel activities.</p>
<h3 style="text-align: justify;">Typically Adopted Criteria</h3>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Sports pitches such as Multi Use Games Areas [MUGAs] are typically assessed according to the recommendations of Sport England document ‘Artificial Grass Pitches (AGP) Acoustics – Planning Implications’.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">This document gives recommended methodologies for calculating the noise level due to AGP use at different receivers.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Although padel courts may not use artificial grass, the guidance of this document is considered the most relevant applicable to a proposed noise source of sports activity. The sports mentioned in the document are Football, Rugby and Hockey, sports which all include ball impacts, particularly Hockey.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Typically, the predicted level of noise generated by a proposed padel court would also be compared with the existing residual level of ambient noise, to ensure that the new noise source would not become dominant.</p>

				<div class="et_pb_text_inner"><p>As one of the UK&#8217;s busiest airports, Stansted Airport plays a critical role in connecting London and the East of England to the rest of the world.</p>
<p>Clement Acoustics with Farrans Construction has been engaged to provide acoustic, noise and vibration design input for the Stansted Transformation Programme, inclusive of new Skylinks, bussing gate and terminal extension.</p>
<p>One of the key areas of focus for the airport’s environmental management is noise and vibration assessment throughout the project.</p>
<h3>Why Noise and Vibration Matter</h3>
<p>Airports are significant sources of environmental noise, largely from aircraft operations but also from ground-based activities such as construction and fixed mechanical plant. If left unmanaged, noise can affect the health and wellbeing of nearby residents, disrupt wildlife habitats, and reduce overall quality of life.</p>
<p>Vibration, while less obvious, is another important factor. It can result from heavy aircraft movements, ground transport infrastructure, or construction work, potentially causing discomfort or structural damage in nearby buildings.</p>
<p>Properly assessing and managing noise and vibration is therefore essential.</p>
<h3>How Noise and Vibration Assessments Are Conducted</h3>

<li>Baseline Monitoring</li>
</ol>
<p style="padding-left: 40px;">Before any major development or operational change, baseline studies are carried out. These involve setting up monitoring equipment at various locations around the airport and in surrounding communities. The data collected establishes the existing levels of noise and inform further detailed design.</p>

<li>Predictive Modelling</li>
</ol>
<p style="padding-left: 40px;">Advanced computer models simulate how changes resulting from ground-based aspects of the Stansted Transformation Programme might alter noise and vibration patterns. These models take into account factors from both existing airside and landside noise sources, new noise sources associated with the transformation programme, weather patterns, and terrain.</p>

<li>Impact Assessment Reports</li>
</ol>
<p style="padding-left: 40px;">Detailed reports are prepared, analysing potential impacts and recommending mitigation measures to control adverse noise and vibration impacts. These assessments are reviewed by planning and other appropriate bodies and form an important part of the airport’s planning applications.</p>
<p>Through appropriate acoustic, noise and vibration design, Clement Acoustics alongside Farrans Construction and other design partners are enabling this significant transformation to Stansted Airport which will be enjoyed by millions of future passengers.</p></div>

<li>Provide employees with hearing protection if noise exposure cannot be reduced by other methods;</li>

<li>Carry out health surveillance where there is a risk to health.</li>
</ul>
<p>Depending on the level of noise exposure, the Control of Noise at Work Regulations requires employers to take specific action at certain action values. It is generally recommended for noise at work assessments to be conducted and reviewed at least every two years, although insurance providers and specific employers may stipulate differently.</p></div>
